The dependent clause placed at the beginning of the sentence functions to establish a setting and modifies the pronoun “they” in order to clarify the subject. The dash before “of joy that kills” engenders a natural pause thus building momentary suspense leading to the ironic twist in which “joy” becomes the cog that ultimately leads to her demise.
I put the prepositional phrase "when the doctors came" comes first, because it modifies who "they" are. Placing it anywhere else would make "they" ambiguous. Unlike a comma, the dash seemingly separates the two clauses even more, and makes them seem less repetitive because one ends with "of ..." and another begins with "of..." This also puts more emphasis on the joy, rather than the heart disease. It also emphasizes the twist of events, for when it suddenly changes from grief into great joy, and then great joy into grief again.
“When the doctors came, they said she had died of heart disease– of joy that kills.”

By stating that she is going to a parallel universe, Ehrenreich is able to exaggerate the huge difference in the lifestyles of the middle/higher-class people, and the lifestyles of the lower-class people. A "Parallel Universe" also suggests that she is going to a completely foreign area, not just a new city or country, but a completely different universe, the lower-class life. The names that Ehrenreich mentions demonstrate how many people who are not lower-class people, often look down on lower-class people. In many local restaurants in middle and higher-class areas, the waiters or waitresses are often called by sir or miss, which are more formal ways to call them, yet in lower-class areas, the the waiters and waitresses are called by more demeaning names like "blondie". And by stating that her father "never got out of the mines" in the parallel universe, it suggests that she must have lived a decent life when she was growing up, considering her father got out of the mines and probably became successful.
To bed by 1:30 or 2:00, up at 9:00 or 10:00, read for an hour while my uniform whirls around in the landlord's washing machine, and then it's another eight hours spent following Mao's central instruction, as laid out in the Little Red Book, which was: Serve the people" (Line 164-167).

Ehrenreich states two choices of time each for going to bed and waking up because it implies that minimum-wage workers only have limited choices to choose from for their daily schedules. With this disadvantage, some hardworking people who gets paid very little still manage to put a considerable amount of effort in trying to accommodate their customers with satisfaction. The speaker/author uses "Mao's central instruction" in the Little Red Book as a metaphor, comparing the Chairman's statements about modesty to the duty the author has. She adapts his ideas and suggestions to her daily life because she is now willing to spend eight hours a day working in real life in order to "serve the people." According to the Little Red Book, Zedong quotes, "Our duty is to hold ourselves responsible to the people. Every word, every act and every policy must conform to the people's interests, and if mistakes occur, they must be corrected -- that is what being responsible to the people means." By using this metaphor in her very last sentence, it shows that Ehrenreich now understands that helping others, as a worker who either gets paid alot or a little, is the main factor of happiness. Ehrenreich saying "my uniform whirls around in the landlord's washing machine" is also another way of showing her readers that this isn't the last day she is going to work; washing her uniform is a sign that she will perform her duty all over again the following next day. From the beginning to end, the author's tone changes from sarcastic to admiring to show that her point of view on minimum-wage workers has drastically changed.
Quote:

Analysis/Reflection:

Continuing off of what we discussed in class, many people has stated that it's not necessarily a bad to "cheat the system" or a business when simply taking an extra napkin, taking an extra packet of sugar, or having another slice of pie on the house--which brings me to my argument. In a way, Ehrenreich complains through narration about how she doesn't make much money when working a minimum-waged job. Although, if she is complaining, why does she bother to add extra condiments and such? For tips? Will tips at a minimum-waged job really earn her a whole lot more of excess cash? In a sense, I am arguing against this quote in this reflection. It is a bit of a contradiction for her to whine her way through the excerpt when she's the one who's "nickel and diming" the restaurant where she works.
“I had been vain enough to worry about coming across as too educated for the jobs I sought, but no one even seems interested in finding out how overqualified I am.”(89-92)

In this passage, Ehrenreich shows how egotistical she is. She states here that no one wanted to hire her for a position, but then she throws in a comment saying that she is overqualified for the position. Ehrenreich still wants to show the readers that even though she is taking this ‘undercover’ job, she still is a highly educated woman. Frankly, I could care less about the education she has received, all I want to know is how low-wage workers survive in the cruel world. Throughout the whole passage, Ehrenreich always adds in her personal thoughts about how great she is, or how she does not belong in such a place dirty and disgusting place. For example, she states, “Sometimes I play with the fantasy that I am a princess who, in penance for some tiny transgression, has undertaken to feed each of her subjects by hand.”(114-115) She keeps telling and reminding the reader that she is above all the low-wage workers in class and in knowledge.
“I hate the drive, along a roadside studded with white crosses commemorating the more effective head-on collisions, but it’s a sweet little place—a cabin...”

This passage is teeming with literary devices. First off, Ehrenreich uses alliteration such as “with white” and “crosses commemorating,” to draw attention to these dismal words. She uses the words “more effective” to take on a business-like, impartial, and slightly sarcastic tone, acting as if she doesn’t care. It is also very curious that she says that the crosses commemorate collisions. “Commemorate” connotes honor, taking note of a job well done. Why would she act like it’s a commemorable, or an honorable thing to have effectively collided into a car, killing someone inside? So if you wonder why Americans are so obese, consider the fact that waitresses both express their humanity and earn their tips through the covert distribution of fats." (line 127-133)

Ehrenreich explains that the workers, out of kindness, give extra to the customers that "signal our love," making it sound like they are doing a good thing for the customers when they give more than what they should, when their boss is not around. This shows how kind-hearted these workers can be, bending the rules just to give others a little extra something. She explains that because it is their job to serve and make the food, they are allowed to control how much extra customers should receive on their salad or desserts. Since the workers are willing to put some extra food for the customers, this causes her to change her bias and thought from the beginning where she looked down on the workers, and begins to have an appreciation for them, seeing that they are truly kind and caring people, even with better character than some higher paid workers are. This also shows that even if the workers get paid less, they still make the best out of what they have, which seemed impossible to Ehrenreich when she first went "undercover." She then moves toward a sarcastic tone saying that due to the generosity of waitresses, "Americans are so obese," because waitresses are going beyond what they should to provide a little extra for the customers. However, she also says that the waitresses "earn their tips through the covert distribution of fats," making it sound like all they want in return is a little extra money for themselves. Since they are giving extra, is their main hope simply to receive more tips or to be kind and treat the customers as they would want to be treated?
But the nonprincesses working with me are just as indulgent, even when this means flouting management rules- as to, for example, the number of croutons that can go on a salad (six). “Put on all you want,” Gail whispers... This chain of good-doing inspires Ehrenreich to “pick up the tab for [the stranger’s] pie and milk.” It occurred to me that these acts are examples of “human expression.” By exhausting the supply of croutons behind her employer’s back, Gail is “flouting management rules.” But I believe that these are not even rules. If our society is set on enforcing rules, they should also be obligated to reward the acts of kindness. But that’s a stretch. Then why set these rules? All these rules do is constrict employees from being human. We are all consumers of human expression. We see and react to expressions such as happiness, sadness, and the act of giving more croutons and spotting food for a stranger parallel them. By using words that have a negative connotation, like "fear" and "indignation," Ehrenreich reveals her point-of-view through her hesitancy in admitting herself as one who belongs to the lower class, socially speaking.
A cabin more or less, set in the swampy backyard of the converted mobile home where my landlord, an affable TV repairman, lives with his bartender girlfriend..."
Ehrenreich previously mentioned the landlord as being a terrifying man, but in this quote, she describes the landlord as an affable TV repairman. I think the significance in this quote lies on how Ehrenreich describes the landlord and his girlfriend. The addition of adjectives that were used to describe the landlord as an affable TV repairman completely contradicts my first impression of a landlord. When I first think of a landlord, I think wealth, money, and management--not TV repair. Describing his girlfriend as a bartender, Ehrenreich is able to qualify the stereotypical lifestyle minimum-wage-workers "tend" to live in. In that case, throughout this quote, I felt as if Ehrenreich was mocking the minimum-wage-worker's lives, almost insulting their lives in her sarcastic, yet curious tone.
This seems to be a fairly general rule: if you want to stack Cheerios boxes or vacuum hotel rooms in chemically fascist America, you have to be willing to squat down and pee in front of a health worker (who has no doubt had to do the same thing herself)" (Line 68).

In this particular sentence Ehrenreich’s diction strongly emphasizes her sarcastic tone. By saying "stack Cheerios boxes" and "to be willing to squat down and pee" it utilizes her sarcastic tone and creates a humorous tone as well. This shows her unique style of writing, because not many authors write with such sarcasam and humor. I think Ehrenreich is also trying to show the irony of that rule. Why should such an easy job as stacking Cheerios boxes require a pee sample? It gives the reader a sense of how ridiculous that rule is to Ehrenreich. When Ehrenreich says chemically fascist America, it made me pause to think for awhile, because that phrase seemed completely tangent from the rest of the sentence. After thinking for awhile I discussed with my colleague Joanne. The connotation we came up with, was that Ehrenreich feels that America has become a society that has fallen into a certain process—a permanent process. A process in which the government controls everything and everything we do must be according to a set of rules that cannot be broken.
I play with the fantasy that I am a princess, who in penance, for some tiny transgression"..."nonprincesses just as indulgent"..."She dips into her own tip money to buy biscuits and gravy for an out-of-work mechanic" "Only when you seek happiness for others will it come to you"

Ehrenreich ,ust live in a "fantasy" of being a "princess in penance" to cope with the struggle of working while her coworkers, "the nonprincesses working with her as just as indulgent" willing ro "dip into their own tips to buy gravy and biscuits for an out-of work mechanic. This obviously suggest that her coworkers have better hearts than than average white-collared person. Furthermore, she includes the detail of sign that reads, "Only when you seek happiness for others will it come to you".

Ehrenreich continues to be biased by making a generalization that housekeepers look like "faded ex-hippie types in shorts with long hair pulled back in braids." In here, Ehrenreich is beginning to add positive diction about what she would call "trailer trash" such as the "bouncy manager." Even though she agrees that she would fit as a housekeeper by the way she dresses, she cannot help but continue to be biased in her generalizations. The diction "actually" tells us that she had not expected the manager to be so detailed in taking her around to "see the rooms and meet the current housekeepers." It shows that she realizes that these "trailer trash" managers aren't what she had expected, and also adds a surprised yet sarcastic tone.
We'd surely do better if only we knew any better," but that is not true--people will tend to sacrifice the greater ecological good in favor of their own comfort or convenience. But are they truly needed? Must they intertwine with the very practice of celebrating Christmas to the extent that christmas light decoration sales grow exponentially each year even in the midst of economic turmoil? Instead efforts should be taken to limit the illumination glistering from home-fronts because of their detrimental effects on many aspects of society. Foremost, the copiousness of lights damages the environment. Lights are unequipped with LED power-saving technology. Thus, they steadily sip electricity out of power grids until the tap runs closely dry. Cities can't procure too much more energy when so much power is drained out by the numerous heaters cranked up ten degrees during Winter. Moreover, light pollution is a highly unconsidered impact on the Winter scenery, often a season when elusive astrological phenomenon present themselves for a hasty period. The illumination of lights beaming off houses into the wholesome sky paint a hazy filament that obscures the naturally scintillating stars across the sky from gazing eyes. Additionally, lights upon inflatable statues upon glittering ornaments upon pop-up Santas upon even more lights contort the true meaning of Christmas. Lights add on to the materialistic mentality of society in which Christmas means consumerism; miles of lines stretching from every Wal-Mart check-out stand. Competition surges with people pinning wallet against credit card in attempts to have the most Christmas "spirited" house--because of course more lights mean more spirit. Its a pity that Channel 4 NBC News will report on brilliant home lighting for four consecutive days while a local food shelter's plea for donations is fortunate to win three minutes on a Monday night broadcast. Christmas lights are shining brighter now-a-days then the Christmas cheer in people's hearts. For such detriments, it is my opinion that Christmas lights musn't be obliterated, but rather limited. Limited in order to save what precious energy and night vistas we have. Limited to remind people the true essence of Christmas. And limited to better society in general. It may be a small and single step to social corrections, but it only takes one short slip of a rock to initiate a landslide.
Many people would rather die than run a mile. Many students I have spoken to feel that is unnecessary to take P.E. because it is a waste of time and less important than academic courses. Although some individuals believe this may be true, I personally believe that physical education is vital to the students overall well-being and the aid they need to achieve in school. If sports and P.E. were not offered or required at our school, most people would struggle more with weight and health issues. Our society presently has issues with weight, but imagine how much worse it would be if students were not obligated to run around and participate in various outdoor activities. A majority of students who feel it is unnecessary to be outdoors playing sports would most likely be inactive outside of school. Numerous amounts of teenagers enjoy consuming large quantities of fast food, and a great deal of those teenagers struggle with maintaining their weight. A benefit from schools offering P.E. is that it helps those who love to live off of fast food. Though we are not kindergarten students anymore, high schoolers, teenagers, and adults are still in need of a nap, a 5 minute nap, a 30 minute nap, or a 2 hour nap; we need a nap. Some may say that a nap only causes us to loose time on finishing up homework until our eyes can't help but close, arguing that a nap only makes us more tired and messes up our sleep cycle. But others would argue that it refreshes us and puts our head back into what we were doing by giving us more focus, concentration, and attention. Without a little break, most of us get cranky and annoyed by the slightest things. Then, with what little energy we have, we loose focus in our homework and studying, and then fail to put in our best effort.
