As many of my other colleagues, I also arranged my sentence this way. I felt the doctors had to come before the death to, as Grace mentioned, give the final verdict. The use of the comma between the disease and joy makes it gramatically correct, but it also helps to symbolize the split in the contrasting ideas of joy and happiness. Ending the sentence with joy also helps to portray a picture of a body with a smile still attached to it and to round off the story with a typical, sort of, happy ending.
Of joy that kills, when the doctors came, they said she had died of heart disease."

While the large majority of my esteemed colleagues decided to place "of joy that kills" at the end of the sentence, I decided to go for broke and put it at the beginning. At the beginning of the sentence, it hits you over the head immediately and puts a slight twist on the whole thing. Also, placing her cause of death at the end of the sentence gives the reader an appropriate closure.
When the doctors came, they said she had died of heart disease--of joy that kills.

Similar to my other colleagues, I chose the em dash to emphasize the phrase "of joy that kills". The phrase appropriately summarizes the situation in a few words. Mrs M's "joy" represents her sudden shock while her heart disease delivered the final blow to "kill" her. The emphasis at the end of the sentence also provides a dramatic ending not only for the sentence but also the whole story.
When the doctors came, they said she had died of heart disease—of joy that kills."

I believe that heavy emphasis is needed on the phrase "of joy that kills" because it is such an ironic point within the story/sentence. The grief that Mrs. M had felt had been built up so much that it seemed like she may actually pass away because of it. But to have her die out of joy, after all that had happened, was simply backwards. Also, it ads to the morbid realization that, in the end, her husband was alive, and she was the deceased one.
When the doctors came, they said she had died of heart disease--of joy that kills."

After chuckling at the irony, I decided that this structure made the most sense. The first reason would have to be that any other order feels very uncomfortable to me. This arrangement presents the doctors and then their news in a way that makes sense. The comma and the -- build up the dramatic effect. Doctors came? She DIED?? Of what? She died of joy.
When the doctors came, they said she had died of heart disease--of joy that kills.

The sentence arrangement follows a chronological format. "When the doctors came" begins the sentence because it is an effective dependent clause, and it explains who "they" are. "They said she had died" quickly follows for a dramatic effect because the audience wonders, "Why did the doctors come? What will they figure out?" They figure out that she died. "Of heart disease" is an essential appositive clause that explains the causes of her death. Rather than stating that she had died of heart disease and joy that kills, "of joy that kills" can be separated from the sentence for a dramatic effect. The paradoxical phrase at the end becomes that much more effective, so that "of heart disease" may even be omitted, and the sentence can read, "They said she had died of joy that kills.
When the doctors came, they said she had died of heart disease--of joy that kills.

As stated before, the minimum-wage workers are the "nonprincesses" implying that if they are not the royalty, they are the minions. Just as every kingdom needs to have workers to help, every society needs willing people to work the hard jobs. Her allusion states that minimum-wage workers are doing nothing wrong, so they are not to be totally ignored.
Response: Compared to the beginning of the passage, Ehrenreich now speaks differently of the low-wage workers. Although she still perceives them as "nonprincesses," she points out with this detailed line the affection and humanity given off by the workers toward the consumers (116). In this sentence, it is evident that her tone towards low-wage workers changes, for she does not add condescending little remarks such as those about her superiority and how it's not her "actual life." She adds in this detail of Gail's kindness to the out-of-work mechanic to evoke thoughts, or even second-thoughts, about low-wage workers.
I really like the imagery Ehrenreich presents in this quote as she expresses how decrepit her new job is by describing her surroundings.
Ehrenreich's pride gets the best of her in the job application process because she realizes how "overqualified" she is. From her own point of view, we know she is indeed overqualified because of her reputation as an established writer. Her pride and her view as a higher status promotes her to think that she would be "too educated." I find her statement ironic in that she was "terrified of being recognized" (lines 6-7) and now she's worried of not being recognized for her overqualified work. Tennis is an amazing sport; it combines a great work out with amazing fun. Muscles, such as the biceps, triceps, forearms, and especially the calves, are constantly used when playing the sport. The constant motion needed to keep up with the lightning fast tennis ball keeps the player in a constant motion, working out much of the leg muscles. The arm strokes involved in returning the balls strengthen the arms and keep it in perfect condition. Catching the tennis ball on your tennis racquet will help improve hand-eye coordination; naturally your reflexes will get better as your eyes accustom to the speed of the ball. With all this motion involved in playing tennis, you are bound to stay in tip top shape. Along with the workout, you’ll also notice that it is a great way to interact with your friends. We have pushed wilderness to the corners of the earth and to the brinks of remote islands. Animals struggle to survive in today's wilderness, not to mention that poachers, human beings, are hunting them mercilessly for their tusks, for their horns, for their lush fur. It's up to us now, to protect the few that remain. There are only 40 Amur Leopards left in the world. No more than 64 Javan Rhinos. It's up to us to give them and their descendants the best chance at life that they can have. True, we are taking away their freedom by placing them in zoos. But what is freedom to an animal? Do they even realize that they are confined, that they are robbed of their will, as Heidi put it? In well-managed zoos, they are protected. They are fed. They are given acres to roam as they wish. They can reproduce and pass on their genes. Due to the mistakes and transgressions of our ancestors, it is up to us now to give back these animals their wilderness; however, this cannot happen unless modifications are made to their habitats. The poachers must go. The unblemished, ancient forests of 5,000 years ago must come back. Only by doing this, can we ensure their survival.
Homework. During the school day, students receive assignment after assignment from all of their teachers. By the time the last bell rings, most have at least one thing to do for each class. Though, each teacher figures that they have not assigned that much for the day, after having seven classes, it tends to add up. Every day, many spouses have affairs and the majority of those go unheard of. Those people are just as wrong, and it is not fair to patronize Tiger Woods any further than them. Also, no reports have surfaced yet that he is an unfit father. As far as the public knows, he has been a great dad for his adolescent children. Life is now a complicated machine filled with manmade parts: the global economy is a jumble no single person can dream of fully understanding; social relationships around the world are fraught with artificial drama; and bureaucracy hides behind mountains of paperwork while hoping to confuse adventurers with paper trails that lead nowhere. As a result, the polar ice caps are melting; slowly, but surely, they are disappearing. Along with the shrinking of the ice, the population of creatures associated with the North Pole is also diminishing. The black and white penguins that depend on krill are finding that the shrimp, once teeming in the ocean, are now scarce. The decrease of algae growth, due to global warming, has lowered the population of krill, which in turn, is lowering the amount of tuxedoed birds. It is a chain reaction. Likewise, the population of seals, an important food source of polar bears, has been decreasing dramatically, putting the bears in peril. Creatures are also losing their homes; their frozen homes are beginning to thaw. What was the cause of all this? Global warming; but who or what caused global warming? We did. Though we can’t stop global warming now, we can slow it down by reducing the amount of carbon gases being released into the atmosphere. The actors and actresses really did a terrific job in playing their roles and made it as realistic as can be.
